To categorize "The Figure in the Doorway" as "nonsignificant" (James L. Potter, "Robert Frost Handbook", University Park: The Penn State UP, 1977) in the Frost canon is erroneous and certainly ironic; and in Frost's mind would have invoked unmitigated satisfaction in knowing he had achieved what he had striven for--a poetic insight into the incomprehensible makeup of man's emotional and psychological nature his attempt to fathom the complex mystery that is man. His triumph would not have elicited even the shadow of a smile, but an expression whimsical yet pensive. The Figure in the Doorway
